Understanding FOB and CIF Terms for Bulk Toyota RAV4 Shipping

FOB and CIF decide who books the ship, who pays for insurance and when risk moves to you. Here is what each term means for a bulk RAV4 order from China.

Containers being loaded at a port terminal

Every RAV4 quote we send is on FOB or CIF terms. These are two of the Incoterms® 2020 rules published by the International Chamber of Commerce. They set who arranges transport, who pays which costs, and the point where risk passes from seller to buyer. Choosing the right one can save you money and trouble, especially on a bulk order.

What does FOB mean for a RAV4 order?

FOB stands for Free On Board, followed by the port of shipment, for example FOB Ningbo. We deliver the cars, clear them for export in China and load them on board the vessel you nominate. Risk passes to you once the cars are on board. From that point, you pay the sea freight, insurance, unloading, import clearance and delivery.

FOB suits buyers who already have a freight forwarder, ship regularly, or can get good rates on their own route.

What does CIF mean for a RAV4 order?

CIF stands for Cost, Insurance and Freight, followed by the destination port, for example CIF Tema. We book and pay the sea freight and buy cargo insurance to that port. An important detail: under CIF, risk still passes to you when the cars are loaded on board in China. The insurance we buy protects you during the voyage.

Under Incoterms® 2020, the seller only has to buy minimum cover under CIF. If you want wider cover, ask us to arrange it or buy extra cover yourself.

Who pays for what?

Which term is better for bulk orders?

Neither is always better. Use these questions to decide:

  • Do you have a forwarder you trust? If yes, FOB gives you control over the carrier, schedule and rates.
  • Is this your first order from China? CIF is simpler. One quote covers the car and freight to your port.
  • Is your route unusual? For landlocked markets or less-served ports, a forwarder with local reach may handle transit better. Ask us for both options.
  • Do you want one invoice? CIF bundles vehicle and freight. FOB separates them.
  • How much paperwork can your team handle? FOB means you book the vessel and manage the bill of lading with your forwarder.

For cars shipped in containers, the ICC notes that FCA or CIP can fit better than FOB or CIF, because containers are handed over at a terminal before loading. If your forwarder suggests these, we can quote them too.

What mistakes do buyers make with these terms?

  • Thinking CIF means risk passes at the destination. It does not. Risk passes on loading in China; the insurance covers the voyage.
  • Forgetting destination charges. Port handling, storage and unloading fees can add up. Neither FOB nor CIF covers your import duty.
  • Leaving the named port vague. Always write the exact port, for example FOB Ningbo or CIF Callao, in the contract.
  • Not checking the insurance certificate. Under CIF, ask for the policy or certificate and check the insured value and cover.
  • Late vessel booking under FOB. If your forwarder books late, cars wait at the port and storage costs may arise.

How do I compare FOB and CIF quotes fairly?

  1. Ask for both an FOB and a CIF quote for the same versions, quantity and dates.
  2. Get a freight and insurance quote from your own forwarder for the same route.
  3. Add your forwarder's figures to our FOB price and compare with our CIF price.
  4. Check the insurance cover level, the transit time and the shipping method in each case.
  5. Add destination costs, which you pay under both terms: unloading, port fees, duty, taxes and delivery.

We do not publish freight rates because they change with routes, seasons and carriers. Each quote is per order. To see how shipping fits into the full order timeline, read our export process, and compare methods in Ro-Ro vs. container shipping. FAQs

Under CIF, who is responsible if a car is damaged at sea?

Risk passes to the buyer once the cars are loaded on board in China. The seller buys insurance for the voyage, so the buyer makes a claim under that policy. Check the cover level before shipment.

Can I switch from CIF to FOB after my first order?

Yes. Many buyers start on CIF and move to FOB once they have a forwarder. We quote each order separately.
